Smart on crime
My name is Kim Hegvik and I am running for Cass County State’s Attorney. I am running because I believe in a smart on crime approach that improves community safety and reduces recidivism by identifying ways to be more effective, both in the courtroom and in the community.
I have been a prosecutor for over 15 years, and during that time I have focused not only on holding those who commit crimes accountable, but also on addressing the root causes of criminal behavior.
I believe in a smart on crime approach that includes not only incarcerating those who are a danger to our community but also utilizing alternatives to incarceration, mental health and addiction treatment, community supervision programs, and problem-solving courts like drug court.
A smart on crime approach recognizes that we can’t incarcerate everyone who breaks the law. We don’t have the financial resources or jail space to do so.
By exploring alternatives to incarceration, we not only free up beds for people who are a danger to our community, but we also save money in the process that we can use toward things like treatment and other community-based programs.
Thoughtful Administration
As our metro community attempted to tackle the opioid crisis dating back to 2016, I quickly learned that Kim Hegvik was much more than an assistant state’s attorney. She was a champion for people who struggle and get stuck in the legal system.
Kim played a key role as our community tackled addiction issues and we all shaped better ways forward such as narcan availability, improving the Good Samaritan Law, bolstering harm reduction efforts, championing drug court, and supporting public and behavioral health as opposed to hard fast incarceration solely.
She has heart. She’s bright. She’s on the side of the people while still committed to public safety. As Cass State’s Attorney, we’ll have an advocate for families in the prosecutorial office. That’s huge and been a long time coming. I support Kim without reservation.
